In 2006, further research in the necropolis located between the enclosure wall of the step pyramid and the “Dry Moat”, west of the pyramid, brought to light a series of rock-hewn burial shafts and chambers from the final phase of the Old Kingdom. Some of them contained burials in reed coffins, as well as fragments of inscribed blocks. One of the Ptolemaic period burials discovered in the upper stratum of this area was found intact. Beside the mummy, encased in a finely painted cartonnage, it contained a richly decorated canopic chest and a statuette of Ptah-Osiris-Sokar.
