This volume contains records of bone and ivory finds from the archaeological excavations carried out in Alexandria by the Centre d´Études Alexandrines under the direction of Jean-Yves Empereur between 1992 and 2004. The objects were recovered from eleven separately excavated sites in Alexandria within recognised stratigraphy. The chronology of unearthed pieces of bone and ivory carvings ranges from the late Ptolemaic/early Roman, to Byzantine/early Islamic periods. Nearly all the techniques known in antiquity are represented here and show the manifold uses of bone and ivory, starting with objects of everyday use to very high quality artistic products for the luxury market. The catalogue comprises 667 registered items, being selected from over a thousand finds by reason of their worth, significance, and intrinsic interest.
